During the Scramble for Africa the territories of the Somali people were divided into five portions taken by the British, French, Italians, and Ethiopians. The British Empire took what is now northern Somalia and started their presence by making treacherous agreements in 1884 with the tribal chiefs, which were about the safe passage of British trade from India through to the Red Sea and back.
